Labor Day? No labor today

Labor Day sounds like a day when you’re supposed to work. It’s actually the opposite.

Every year, on the first Monday of September, the US celebrates Labor Day — a public holiday dedicated to workers and their achievements.

For Americans, it means a long weekend and one last summer celebration. For everyone else, it’s a good excuse to learn why this unusual holiday exists in the first place.

From protests to a BBQs

That was normal. At least, for many workers in the late 1800s.

On September 5, 1882, around 10,000 workers in New York City gave up a day's pay to march from City Hall to Union Square, demanding fairer hours and safer conditions.

It became known as the first Labor Day parade in history. Over the following years, more states began recognizing this day, and in 1894, it became a federal holiday in the US.

Random facts to drop at the barbecue

  • The first-ever Labor Day wasn't even on a Monday — it was a Tuesday
  • Oregon was the first state to make it official, back in 1887
  • The US avoided putting it on May 1st (International Workers' Day) on purpose — officials didn't want it tied to the socialist movements and riots associated with that date
  • Around 40% of businesses, retail especially, stay open for Labor Day sales
  • Canada celebrates its own Labour Day on the exact same date — one of the rare holidays two countries happen to share
